Ambush is a stance that armies can enter on the campaign map. The stance conceals the army allowing surprise attacks against passing enemies, initiating an ambush battle.
Overview[]
Armies in ambush stance cannot be seen by the enemy unless discovered or if battle is initiated.
Ambushes have a chance to be detected and fail. The terrain on which the ambush is laid affects this chance. The ambush success chance is shown on the tooltip while selecting an army and hovering over any terrain.
An army cannot recruit troops while in the ambush stance.

Strategy[]
Going into ambush stance can work to lure an enemy towards you. By going into the stance right outside a weak city, the enemy may be tricked into thinking it is undefended and move within striking or ambushing range. It can also be a good move in general to try and conceal your movements from your enemies, that way they won't react defensively if they see you coming for a settlement of theirs.
