Total War: WARHAMMER Wiki

Averland is a province introduced in Total War: Warhammer. It begins the campaign controlled by the Averland minor faction.

Background[]

Averland is a founding Electoral Province of The Empire, ruled by "Mad" Count Marius Leitdorf. Named after the River Aver which forms most of its eastern border, it neighbours Wissenland to the west, Stirland to the north and The Moot to the north-east. To the south the Black Mountains and the World's Edge Mountains rise, the physical boundary of the Empire. It is Averland's 'honour' to guard Black Fire Pass, where the God-King Sigmar won his greatest victory over the Greenskins and planted the seeds of the Empire itself. It is the clearest pass through the mountains for many hundreds of miles in either direction, and is therefore of crucial strategic importance.

Unlike most of the Empire, Averland has little forest covering it and is instead mostly a rolling stretch of sun-drenched plains. Unsurprisingly the province's economy revolves around farming, particularly raising the famous Averland longhorn cattle, which are taken to the markets and slaughterhouses of Averheim and Loningbruck every season in huge droves. Such is the local pride in these animals that the nobles of the region traditionally head the droves themselves in colourful (and often drunken) processions. Elsewhere the province supports vineyards, as well as mines and trapping in the foothills of the southern mountains.

Averlanders claim ancestry from the Brigundian tribe, who migrated into the area a thousand years before the time of Sigmar. They consider themselves a brave, open and passionate people, and enjoy a strong relationship with the mountain Dwarfs, who appreciate such qualities. Other Imperial citizens consider them flighty and somewhat 'moon-touched', exemplified by Count Leitdorf, who while being a brave and incisive strategist relies upon the advice of his warhorse Daisy, and has at various times declared war on forests and swarms of bees.
