Border Princes is a minor Southern Realms faction introduced in Total War: Warhammer. It is led by Valmir Gausser and can be found north of The Badlands, west of the Dwarfs and south of The Empire.

Background[ | ]

The Border Prince Confederacy, known also as the Borderlands, The Frontiers or simply as the Border Princes is a vast region within the Old World located between the Black Mountains and Black Fire Pass to the north and the shores of the Black Gulf to the south. This region of vast wilderness is home to a multitude of petty Human kingdoms that were established by highly ambitious adventurers who sought to create a realm of their own. Many times, however, these adventurers usually consist of political or religious refugees from lands such as the Empire, Bretonnia and Kislev.

As such, these lands are infamous as the homes of a wide variety of bandits, mercenaries, cut-throats, pirates and other lawless fugitives. Following the Battle of Black Fire Pass, human colonist and adventurers during the time of Sigismund the Conqueror led a campaign of conquest towards the Empire's southern borders and fought off the Greenskin tribes that used to inhabit the lands, clearing the way for many nobles and colonists from all across the lands of the Old World to colonise and claim patches of this territory as their own.

Diplomatic traits[ | ]

  • Reliable - What is agreed is set in stone. It is highly unlikely that this one will break a treaty or go back on an agreement.
  • Underdog - Instead of trying to get to the top of the food chain, this one prefers joining a worthy faction in confederation.

The Border Princes are similar to Barak Varr in that they serve as the first barrier to the hordes of Greenskins in the Badlands. If the Border Princes are wiped out, then it is likely the WAAAGH!!! is coming north. That being said they serve as a good barrier for Order factions and the first hurdle to Grimgor and Wurrzag. For Belegar's campaign it is best to befriend these humans just for the trade income alone and also to not get on their bad side. Belegar has enough enemies as is.

This faction is frequently right on the front line of a war between Greenskins, Dwarfs, and Skaven, their success or failure can be a good way of telling which one is coming out on top.

In the chaos of Mortal Empires, this faction usually falls eventually. However, sometimes they are able to maintain their territory and even expand greatly simply by being allied to the right powerful factions.

In Immortal Empires, the Border Princes' lives are further complicated by the arrival of Skrag the Slaughterer at Karak Angazhar. Despite being sandwiched between him, Aranessa Saltspite and the Badlands, there are still enough friendly factions in the region for them to hang on, and indeed without the player's intervention they usually do.

Trivia[ | ]

  • As they are not part of the Empire they cannot be confederated with by Empire factions. They also use a limited roster of Empire troops from tiers 1-3 and a limited set of heroes and mount options.[1]
