Not to be confused with Daemons of Chaos, the race introduced in Warhammer III
The Daemons or Chaos Daemons were a playable army in 8th edition Warhammer Fantasy Battle. In Total War: Warhammer III, the Daemons of Chaos appear as a playable race, and there are also many daemon units split between various Chaos god specific races.
In Game[]
This unit is Daemonic (has physical resistance, does not rout, is immune to terror, takes damage when Leadership is low)
In terms of Leadership, Daemon units are similar to Undead units as they are immune to terror and they do not rout. However, if their Leadership is low, they start taking damage. If their Leadership is extremely low, they become
Banished!, when they rapidly lose health until they are defeated and their units disappear.
This is represented by all daemon units having Daemonic Instability.
In Total War: Warhammer III, the following factions have access to at least some daemon units:
Khorne (all factions)
Tzeentch (all factions)
Slaanesh (all factions)
Nurgle (all factions)
Daemons of Chaos (all factions)
Warriors of Chaos (all factions, via Gifts of Chaos)
Dark Elves (
Cult of Pleasure only)
Bound Fire Daemons[]
Bound Fire Daemons cannot be routed, but they take damage when their Leadership is broken.
Bound Fire Daemons also have:
Physical Resistance
Fire Resistance
Fear and Terror Immunity
Bound Fire Daemons are also Unbreakable whilst most of their hit points are remaining.
Introduced in Forge of the Chaos Dwarfs, this type of daemon works mechanically the same as a regular daemon would, taking damage when their leadership is low ( Daemonic Instability) and disappearing if their leadership is extremely low (
Banished) with few minor differences. First, all Bound Fire Daemons are
Unbreakable thanks to their
Burning Bright ability so long as their hit points remain above the 25% threshold and lastly they gain a 35% fire resistance.
Bound Fire Daemons are available only to the Chaos Dwarfs.
Lore[]
The Daemons of Chaos are evil creatures of pure magic, who come from another dimension called the Realm of Chaos. They cannot be truly killed - if their physical form is destroyed they will return to the Realm of Chaos. However they can be trapped, such as in war machines (Hellcannon) weapons (The Slayer of Kings) or mortal hosts (Malus Darkblade). They can only manifest in areas with lots of magic, and will disappear if magic is drained. This was the purpose of the Great Vortex - to drain away most of the excess magic in the world and prevent daemonic invasion. The Daemons of Chaos are naturally a Chaos aligned race.
Chaos Daemons are not the only kind of Daemon in the lore. There are also Verminlords of the Skaven, and K'daai of the Chaos Dwarfs.
Uniquely, the Daemons of Chaos also appear in Warhammer Fantasy's science fiction sister game, Warhammer 40k.
For more lore information on the Daemons of Chaos, see the Daemons of Chaos page on the Warhammer Fantasy Wiki.
Daemon units before Warhammer III[]
Prior to Warhammer III, there are only a few daemon units in the game series:
- The Lord of Change (including the four unique lords: Sarthorael the Everwatcher, Azrik the Maze Keeper, En'tiro Chosen of Tzeentch, and Kelmored).
- Tz'arkan is a daemon (possibly of Slaanesh although never confirmed) possessing Malus Darkblade.
- The Hellcannon unit is, in the lore, a war machine possessed by a daemon.
- In lore, The Slayer of Kings wielded by Archaon the Everchosen has a daemon trapped inside.
