They say the Graveyard Rose walks the hazy barrier between the realm of the living and the realm of the dead.

Elspeth von Draken is an Empire Legendary Lord unit introduced in Total War: Warhammer III with Thrones of Decay. In the campaign, she leads the Wissenland & Nuln faction.

Description[]

For three generations the name of Elspeth von Draken, Magisterix of the Amethyst College and Arch-Wizard of the Lore of Death, has been spoken of in hushed tones in the reeking tavern gutters and vaulted noble halls of Nuln alike. An obsessive experimenter and mystic, Elspeth goes where she will, collecting and collating a storehouse of mystical artefacts and lore, which she guards jealously. Surrounded by all manner of occult items, Elspeth has become so saturated with the force of Shyish – the Amethyst Wind of Death – that there are some who whisper she is no longer human at all. To her enemies, Elspeth seems to stand halfway between life and death, a violent spectre in human form whose magic destroys all it touches.

Campaign Description[]

The Realm of Chaos[]

Immortal Empires[]

Elspeth von Draken is summoned to Nuln, wielding the power of the Amethyst Order to answer the Elector Countess of Wissenland's call to arms.

Attributes[]

  • Wizard
  • Spellcaster: This unit can cast spells.
  • Armour-Piercing: The damage of armour-piercing weapons mostly ignores the armour of the target, making them the ideal choice against heavily-armoured enemies. They are often heavier and attack at a slower rate though, making them less efficient against poorly-armoured targets.

Strategy[]

As a unit, Elspeth is a fairly typical wizard lord that needs protection until she unlocks her dragon at level 16. Her Darkwalker ability does allow her to tank a bit better than most, and you can blob up low tier infantry around her using it for artillery bombardments and Purple Sun casts. You risk getting her stuck while a duelist eats her alive doing this, however.

Her unique skill line greatly decreases the cost of Death spells, specifically Purple Sun. Combined with her Pale Scythe item and Life Leeching and she greatly benefits from having one or two other wizards in her army. A Jade Wizard may seem like the obvious choice, but bear in mind she has access to regeneration, so doesn't strictly need a healer herself.

The breath attack of the dragon is uniquely better suited to casting on a SEM rather than a regular unit, ideally one with low magic resistance.

If confederated by The Golden Order, you'll technically regenerate Winds of Magic just by casting the spells. -20% spell-casting cost plus Elspeth's own -15% reduction along with -20% if you manage to defeat Yuan Bo with Elspeth, and the Colleges of Magic's buff making a total of -75% spell-casting cost reduction (Plus, the Purple Sun has it's own reduction in her skill-tree) and if you want to buff Lore of Death even more, you can hunt down Astragoth Ironhand for extra range on spell-casting.
