Frost Wyrm is a Kislev monster unit introduced in Total War: Warhammer III, added with Patch 4.2.0 to Shadows of Change.
Recruitment[]
Unlocked with: Animal Den
Description[]
Frost Wyrms are swift and sinuous creatures with the form of flightless Drakes; their fanged claws, scyth-like jaws and vicious, lashing tails are made even more deadly by their freezing breath. Hibernating during the warmest parts of the year, they venture out to hunt the herbivorous beasts of the oblasts only when the climate is at its coldest, and in times of famine have even been known to consume creatures of Chaos such as Trolls or Minotaurs. As entities of Ice Magic, Frost Wyrms are naturally aligned to the Ice Court’s Witches, who in the most desperate times will travel to the Crags to beseech the slumbering Wyrms for aid.
Attributes[]
Monster
- ▲ Armour-Piercing: The damage of
armour-piercing weapons mostly ignores the armour of the target, making them the ideal choice against heavily-armoured enemies. They are often heavier and attack at a slower rate though, making them less efficient against poorly-armoured targets.
- ▲ Frostbite: The intense cold cuts into the flesh and burns the foe's extremities, greatly reducing their speed.
- ▲ Causes Terror: This unit can cause terror, making its melee target rout for a short time. Units that cause terror are immune to terror and fear themselves.
- ▲ Scaly Skin: Scaly skin or hides help to dampen or deflect the damage caused by missile weapons, increasing this unit's Missile Resistance.

Passive Abilities[]
Strategy[]
Although statistically solid, Frost Wyrms have a large hitbox, making them susceptible to being surrounded when micromanaged poorly. They do however have a high armour rating to compensate for this. They are speedy and can slow enemies down with Frostbite, making them good at dealing with flankers and running fleeing enemies down, adding to Kisev's already formidable ability to slow enemy units and finish off retreating ones. They are available quite early in campaign, but their availability is checked by a hefty cost and upkeep. They work well as a mount for generic Ice Witches, as the speed, armor, and missile resistance are particularly appreciated by a normally slow, fragile caster that struggles to survive against physical ranged attacks.
Frost Wyrms as an SEM are niche units: as the natural logical step after Snow Leopards, they play the same role. They are very good at pressuring enemy Hero or Lord units, especially if they are ranged or have a large mount.
Trivia[]
The Frost Wyrm was originally released as a large Tier V unit. It was changed to a smaller Tier III unit in Hotfix 5.0.3.
