A pack of Wolf Riders can appear from nowhere, strike with precision, and be away before the enemy knows what has happened.

Goblin Wolf Riders are a Greenskins Greenskins melee cavalry unit introduced in Total War: Warhammer.

Recruitment[ | ]

Description[ | ]

Goblin Wolf Riders are dangerously fast, able to outride all other beasts save perhaps the swift steeds of the Elves. Some Wolf Rider mobs use bows to fill their enemies with arrows. They lope into range, unleash a hail of arrows, and then retreat before the foe can respond. Wolf Riders often harass the flanks of oncoming troops, but have also been known to charge into smaller (and more vulnerable) units such as war machines and enemy scouts. Other Wolf Rider mobs are more heavily armoured and these Goblins will dare to lower their spears and attack larger formations, howling as they crash headlong into enemy troops. However, it is often said that the snarling wolves are more formidable foes than the Goblins who ride atop their shaggy backs. More than one Warboss has found out that "dog boyz" are not always reliable, finding Wolf Riders as quick to leave the battlefield as they are to launch an attack.

Attributes[ | ]

  • Cavalry wolf Cavalry
  • Shielded: Shields have a chance of blocking arrows, bolts, rifle shots and similar small arms fire - but only in a forward facing arc.
  • Very Fast: This unit can run circles around most other units, taunting and harrassing the enemy or evading its missile fire.

Ranking amongst the lightest cavalry available anywhere, Goblin Wolf Riders have maybe the most laughable charge in the game. Suffice to say they will not do much for you damage-wise, and even standard ranged units will be able to fight back against them a bit. Certainly you should avoid smashing them into anything face first on their own. However they are extremely fast and that makes them good harriers, drawing away better enemy units to pointlessly chase after them, before hopefully an opportunity to hit the back of an engaged unit arises.

It's worth comparing them to other light/shock cavalry in the Greenskin army, because they have a lot. They're a lot cheaper and faster than standard Orc Boar Boyz whilst basically doing the same job, neither fair well against other cavalry. Spiders are better thanks to their poison but are more expensive and just as fragile. Goblin Wolf Rider Archers are arguably better harassers but will do even less damage. Ultimately Wolf Riders make a good case for themselves thanks to being cheap and cheerful, but they do need micro to get the most out of them.
