Heroes or Agents are a type of character unit which may be recruited in service of a faction. Heroes perform actions on the campaign map, but can also join an army to fight in battle.

On the campaign map[]

Unlike lords, heroes can move independently of armies, and can freely move into enemy territory without declaring war. A selected hero can join with a controlled army or move into a controlled settlement by right-clicking the target. A hero marching with an army will fight alongside that army in battle. Thankfully, lone heroes cannot be attacked by enemy armies, only by enemy heroes using the wound or assassinate actions. However, heroes who die in battle during the campaign may be permanently gone (unless they have unlocked the Immortal skill which was introduced in Total War: Warhammer II, in which case they will only be wounded instead). Independent heroes also don't incur trespassing penalties when moving through hostile territory, which can make them useful scouts.

Every faction has a limited number of heroes it can use: this is known as "hero capacity". Hero capacity can be increased by constructing certain buildings or researching certain technologies. Each type of hero available per faction has its own separate capacity. Unique heroes don't count towards any capacity, even if they are similar to a basic type, but naturally have their own limitations.

You can "steal" a Hero from another faction by borrowing their army (cannot be faction leader's army) with military alliance pacts, destroying the said army. The said Hero must be immortal (by reaching level 20) or a Legendary Hero. This allows you to access types of Heroes that your faction cannot access.

In battle[]

In battle, heroes may fight in melee or at range. In addition many heroes have special character abilities, or they are spellcasters. Some heroes may be marked as melee specialists, or duelists, who are very good at taking down other characters in a 1v1 fight.

Wounded Heroes[]

In various situations, heroes can be wounded similar to lords, but by comparison this is more common with heroes. A wounded hero is removed from the campaign map without being outright killed, instead requiring a number of turns to recover.

Unlike lords, wounded heroes do not return to the recruitment pool however (and disbanding them outright removes generic heroes from the game). Instead, they will reappear at the closest owned settlement from where they were wounded, once they have recovered.

While recovering from being wounded, heroes still count towards their respective capacity.

Heroes rank 20 or higher or legendary heroes are always wounded, even if killed in battle.

Types of heroes[]

  • Champion: A powerful leader, usually fights in melee in battle.
  • Dignitary: Similar to a Champion, but usually has other abilities or spells.
  • Wizard: Typically a weak melee hero who is a spellcaster and best kept out of melee combat.
  • Spy: Typically weaker in battle, however they may be skilled duelists against other characters or be decent range combatants.
  • Engineer: Typically a ranged hero who buffs or supports war machines or constructs.
  • Runesmith: Decent in melee combat, but also have many supporting abilities or spells.

Note: These are how heroes are classified in the background of the game, not how they are displayed to the player in most cases (except for most Wizards and some direct overlaps like the Runesmith dwarf hero). For example, an Empire Captain is classified as a Melee Specialist in their unit card, not as a Champion or while Loremaster of Hoeth is decent/excels in melee combat, they are still considered Wizards.

Hero Actions[]

In campaign, heroes may perform actions that strengthen the faction's armies or settlements, or to strike against enemy army, settlement, province or hero. These fall into 3 general categories.

Embed Hero (such as Boost Mobility)[]

Passive benefits to the army that the hero has joined. Only one hero can provide the same type of effect to the same army at once (most recent embed is applied). Most heroes have one such action, exceptions with multiple available actions need to choose which one to provide.

Constant Local Effect (such as Spread Control)[]

Passive effect towards the province where the hero is located at the start of each turn, whether on their own or embedded in an army. Always applies to owned provinces, but varies elsewhere depending on diplomatic status. Typically, the effects are reversed when affecting enemy provinces (ie Spread Control will lower Public Order of enemy provinces). Multiple heroes can affect the same province with the same effect at once.

Target (such as Block Army)[]

Activated actions towards foreign targets of specific types. Typically, heroes will have at least one available action against the 3 categories of Settlements, Heroes and Armies. While generally hostile in nature, they can be used even against allied targets, if desired. In most cases, these actions have a cost and a range of probability of success. Probabilities can be affected various effects on both the selected hero and target.

A failed hero action typically also carries a risk of wounding the hero in the attempt and may also give the target a temporary defensive boost against further attempts.

Successful actions may place restriction effects on the hero or even the entire faction (for example when using hero actions to build Skaven Under-Cities), essentially giving them cooldowns.

Embedded heroes must leave their parent army to carry out a Target action, and the action will always use up any remaining movement, so they will not be able to rejoin any army until the next turn or use more than one action per turn.

Besides the listed actions, all heroes can also scout ruins, though in TWW3, this is only useful for revealing Skaven settlements.

With a hero selected, right-click the desired target to move the Hero there and show a range of options.

Tooltips on the various hero action buttons show more information about that action, including its chance of success. Hostile actions with heroes do not directly lead to war. They may be discovered, however, which will worsen relations between the factions involved.
