Total War: WARHAMMER Wiki

Worse than Hobgoblins on wolfback are Hobgoblins with Bolt Throwers, who cut down the “superior” steeds of the tall races with malicious glee.

Hobgoblin Bolt Thrower are a Chaos Dwarfs artillery unit introduced in Total War: Warhammer III with Patch 6.2.

Recruitment[]

Description[]

The Hobgoblins are a distinctive sub-species of steppe-dwelling Goblins found only within the lands of the Far East, in the rolling, untamed plains of the Eastern Steppes. The Hobgoblin race are considered traitors by all of their Greenskin cousins, not because of their unbelievably treacherous nature, but by their specific betrayal of the Greenskin Uprising of Zharr-Naggrund. This betrayal of their entire race and their inability to even trust each other has ensured that the Hobgoblins have become utterly enthralled to the brutal protection and patronage of the Chaos Dwarfs. Though hated by their kin, the Hobgoblins are nonetheless the scourge of the steppes; feared, hated and powerful in almost equal measure, and also widely abhorred for their cruelty, wickedness and appalling standards of hygiene.

Attributes[]

  • Field Artillery
  • Armour-Piercing Missiles: The damage of armour-piercing weapons mostly ignores the armour of the target, making them the ideal choice against heavily-armoured enemies. They are often heavier and attack at a slower rate though, making them less efficient against poorly-armoured targets.
  • Anti-Large: Anti-Large: Anti-large units have an advantage against targets that are at least as large as a horse. This advantage can be a damage bonus against large targets or an attack that focuses on a very small area. However, some units are simply better against large targets because their attacks are slow and easy to dodge by skilled melee combatants.
  • Poor Accuracy: This unit's attacks are prone to go stray.

Strategy[]

Though virtually identical to Goblin Bolt Throwas, the Hobgoblin variant has slightly more to say for itself. Firstly, as a Hobgoblin unit, in campaign it is a siege weapon that is not beholden to Chaos Dwarf unit caps, making it useful early game in armies that will be instigating sieges. Secondly, kiting cavalry can be a significant problem for the sluggish Chaos Dwarf roster, and large groups of cavalry are easily the best target for Bolt Throwers. It's not that good against single-entities or low-models units, though.

With all that said, it remains a pretty woeful weapon that you'll want to be replacing quickly in non-Hobgoblin crapstacks, particularly given the incredible wealth of siege weapons available to the Chaos Dwarfs.
