Infernal Ironsworn are a Chaos Dwarfs melee infantry unit introduced in Total War: Warhammer III with Forge of the Chaos Dwarfs.
Recruitment[]
Unlocked with: Iron Level
Description[]
The Infernal Guard are drilled ceaselessly by their cruel Castellans, and barracked in the burning deeps beneath the Black Fortress. Their lot is to fight an unceasing battle against the horrors that abound in the desolate wastes nearby. The greatest amongst this warrior elite will be selected to join the Infernal Ironsworn – the personal bodyguard of the Sorcerer-Prophets of the Legion of Azgorh. Clad in blackshard armour forged not just from iron and fire but also from blood, souls and the very stuff of Chaos, they go into battle with the fire and suffering of their dark realm forged into the very fabric of their blades and hammers, graven in smouldering runes of torment and death.
Attributes[]
Magical Axe Infantry
- ▲ Armoured & Shielded: Armoured units can block damage from any source apart from
Armour-Piercing damage.
Shields have a chance of blocking arrows, bolts, rifle shots and similar small arms fire - but only in a forward facing arc.
- ▲ Charge Defence Against All: When standing and bracing against a charge this unit will negate the enemy's
charge bonus.
- ▲ Contempt: This unit won't lose
leadership from witnessing a friendly unit rout unless the routing unit also has Contempt.
- ▲ Flaming Attacks: This unit inflicts flaming attacks. Units hit by flaming attack heal at half the usual rate whilst
'on fire' and sustain additional damage if vulnurable to fire.
Strategy[]
The more fiery Chaos Dwarf counterpart to the regular Dawi Ironbreakers. One notable difference is the ease in recruiting them, given the Chaos Dwarfs' ability to use unpaid laborers in rushing the construction of their provincial capitals and other settlement buildings. However, unlike Ironbreakers, Infernal Ironsworn are limited in not just their exorbitant recruitment and upkeep cost, but also their unit cap to offset this. A centerpiece elite unit for your army, they sport a higher melee attack stat while being slightly less defensive than their Gromril-clad cousins. One notable difference is the lack of magical resistance they possess in exchange for a resistance to fire damage instead (though this is easily remedied in the Hell-Forge with the Spell Resistance upgrade option). Being shielded, most small-arms fire and arrows coming in from the front will be hard-pressed to so much as put a dent into their health pool.
In combination with their excellent leadership, Infernal Ironsworn can and will stay on the battlefield even when completely surrounded. And that's at their base stats alone. With a few upgrades from the Hell-Forge, along with a few point investments into a lord's unit buff traits and some (easily earned) chevrons, these merciless and immovable killers can easily have their melee defense stats reach far higher than even heroes and some legendary lords!
An excellent unit, if not for the fact fielding a significant number of them can feel like overkill, their only true weakness on the battlefield stems from their slow speed. Whatever they can catch and pin in combat will be nothing more than bloody and smoldering pieces of flesh, but anything which (rightly) flees from their advance will easily be able to outpace them.
