Land of the Plaguelord is a special province or area of the campaign map, it is Nurgle's area within the Realm of Chaos. It appears in The Realm of Chaos campaign.

Overview[]

"I spied the mansion and the one that lived within, and I decayed, and I withered."

To enter Land of the Plaguelord, an army must use a Chaos Rift to cross into the Realm of Chaos, and choose the destination as "Land of the Plaguelord."

Land of the Plaguelord is a feotid, rotting garden, a series of otherworldly poisonous swamps which cause severe attrition to all except for Nurgle armies. At the top center of the garden is the Mansion of the Plaguelord, it cannot be approached unless you have gained immunity to Nurgle's diseases/attrition, and it is guarded by The Gardener - Nurgle's favoured Daemon Prince whose soul you must claim to reach the Forge of Souls.

Features:

  • Fighting the armies of the Bubonic Swarm, who guard the realm.
  • The various Points of Interest, where Nurgle (or, rather, Nurgle's guinea-pig daemon Poxfulcrum, working in secret) may offer immunity or other gifts.
  • Extremely severe attrition is suffered by most races here. Players are advised to seek immunity to the diseases at one of the Points of Interest. They cannot enter The Mansion of the Plaguelord without first gaining immunity.

Additionally,

Points of Interest[]

  • Arghus the Plague Moon - The most disgusting of Nurgle's diseases rests on Arghus, the lost Sky-Titan's skull.
  • The Septic Isle - Beware, for setting foot on this island will see you cast with the most virulent of poxes.
  • The Great Tree - The Great Tree's tumid boughs spread across the Chaos Realms, as do its roots.
  • Lair of the Maggot Lord - The Maggot Lord's catacombs are home to his countless, flesh-hungry larvae.
  • Mansion of the Plague Lord

Strategy[]

The player will arrive randomly at one of the Rift Gates scattered across the realm, near to one of the four Points of Interest. They will then be assigned a quest to visit one of the Points of Interest when they arrive, usually on the opposite side of the region. Each Point of Interest (including the objective) will give the stack that visits it a unique 20-turn buff that provides 25% resistance to the Land of the Plaguelord attrition. As these stack, visiting all four will give total immunity to the Plaguelord attrition, at least until one runs out.

Getting all four is not recommended as getting into and out of each PoI involves fighting Bubonic Swarm stacks which can get very dangerous in the lategame, and will also take precious time that your enemies may use more effectively and, more to the point, will let Nurgle's very nasty negative trait build up. However, getting two or three will make it much easier to get around the Land of the Plaguelord, as you always start near to one and are required to go to another.

The Land of the Plaguelord itself is slow and ponderous to get around, being effectively one giant swamp slash cesspit, and armies move at reduced speeds in its bounds. Typically, an army will also have to occasionally duck into Encamp status to recoup the effects of the realm's attrition so as to not get slapped around by the Bubonic Swarm stacks, slowing it even further. This is also highly recommended before entering the final battle at the Mansion; while that battle can be beaten with a lightly attritioned army, it still isn't to be taken lightly.

Because of its back-and-forth nature and layout, along with its slowing terrain, running into the stacks of your competitors attempting to secure souls for themselves is very likely in the Land of the Plaguelord, possibly moreso than anywhere else. If your army is in shape for it, this can be an excellent opportunity to seriously hinder the competition; sniping an opponent's main stack, particularly in the Nurgle competition, can be crippling, since they then have to take up to four turns just to get their faction leader Lord back, and then either build them a new stack or take charge of one that is usually less trained and strong. If they even have time to get back into the Chaos Realms for that round, it should give you plenty of time to finish up your own objectives at the Mansion.

Debuffs[]

If you spend enough time in the Land of the Plaguelord, your character will suffer from a series of successive and increasingly crippling debuffs. They can only be removed in one of two ways -- garrisoning the character in a Provincial Capital settlement or one with a Protection chain in place, or winning the Mansion of the Plaguelord survival battle.

  • Something Within - Speed: -15%, Melee defense: -10% (Lord's army)
  • You feel the worms, wriggling under your skin, climbing up your spine and feeding on your brain.
  • Incessant Bloating - Speed: -30%, Armour-piercing weapon damage: -20, Melee defense: -20% (Lord's army)
  • Your body swells - often your gut, but limbs and your face are susceptible too.
