Loremaster of Hoeth is a High Elves infantry spellcaster/melee hero unit introduced in Total War: Warhammer II. Gifted warriors, whose skill at arms is matched by their intelligence and grasp of magic.


The Loremasters of Hoeth are invariably gifted warriors, for their intellects find even the exacting disciplines of the Swordmasters almost childishly easy to master. Similarly, each Loremaster has a faultless grasp of the principles of magical lore. However, he seldom wastes time in committing more than a sliver of battle magic to memory, being more concerned with weightier and more elusive spells that are little suited to the battlefield. Within the Tower of Hoeth can be found many disciplines of art, magic and war. Most scholars confine themselves to studying but a single path, honing their skills until perfection is achieved. Even amongst the rarefied Elven ranks, it is unusual to find an intellect capable of mastering an entire path, let alone show accomplishment in several, but it is not impossible. Such is the achievement that marks out a Loremaster from a mere scholar.


  • Anti-Infantry: Anti-infantry units have an advantage against targets that are smaller than a horse. This advantage can be a damage bonus against small targets, superior weight used to smash through lighter enemies, or an explosive attack from range that effects a large area.
  • Armour-Piercing: The damage of Modifier icon armour piercing.pngarmour-piercing weapons mostly ignores the armour of the target, making them the ideal choice against heavily-armoured enemies. They are often heavier and attack at a slower rate though, making them less efficient against poorly-armoured targets.
  • Armoured: Armoured: Armoured units can block damage from any source apart from Modifier icon armour piercing.pngArmour-Piercing damage.
  • Spellcaster: This unit can cast spells.

Loremasters use a combination of spells from different lores of magic.


In battle, the Loremaster is a hybrid fighter/caster. His yellow-line skills can make him very tough, while his spell line can give him some powerful support spells (buffs and heals) but stopping short of giving him Arcane Conduit (unless he is taken with the Conductor trait). He can be used as a frontline blocker/tarpit in front of your archer lines due to his toughness if needed, or he can be used grouped with your Swordmasters of Hoeth in reserve since he can buff and heal these expensive infantry efficiently. Compared to the Noble, he doesn't get a flying mount and his offensive hitman potential against enemy Lords is less, but he has similar toughness and better support abilities.

The Loremasters´ strength lies in his versatility. His spells provide buffs to your army, damage to enemy units and lords as well as healing. Embedding him in an army will slowly increase all units´ veterancy, improving their leadership, melee attack/defence as well as reload speed and accuracy. He can also be used to make sieges much easier by creating breaches in the walls on the campaign map before an attack and is capable of defending himself well in melee. Overall there´s not much to dislike about the Loremaster and the only reason you might not want to bring one is if you already have an embedded Mage in your army because they would inevitably be competing for the limited amounts of Winds of Magic.

On the battlefield, maxing out Earth Blood mitigates the need for a Life Mage or a Life Arch-Mage, allowing these other casters to specialize in more offensive schools of magic.
