Total War: WARHAMMER Wiki

The lurid trophies of their many distant conflicts ensure that no two of these wandering mercenaries are armed the same way.

Maneaters (Ogre Pistols) are an Ogre Kingdoms monstrous missile infantry unit introduced in Total War: Warhammer II with Ogre Mercenaries, before being added in Total War: Warhammer III with Ogre Kingdoms (DLC). In Immortal Empires, they're available to Pirates of Sartosa.

Description[]

Maneaters tend to operate in small groups, some of which have fought together for years. Despite their outlandish appearance, these tight-knit bands excel at breaking heads. It's rare for any two Maneaters to fight or be equipped in exactly the same manner, and opponents find themselves facing a dizzying array of different weapons and combat techniques. The only real factors uniting the individualistic Maneaters are an monumentally inflated sense of self-worth and the capacity to smash aside lesser creatures without breaking a sweat.

Attributes[]

  • Monstrous Missile Infantry
  • Hybrid: This unit can perform well in both ranged combat and melee.
  • Armour-Piercing: The damage of armour-piercing weapons mostly ignores the armour of the target, making them the ideal choice against heavily-armoured enemies. They are often heavier and attack at a slower rate though, making them less efficient against poorly-armoured targets.
  • Ogre Charge: When attacking braced charge defenders, this unit only loses half of its charge bonus.
  • Fire Whilst Moving: This unit can fire while on the move.

Strategy[]

Maneaters can be surprisingly formidable. They have longer range than many gun units and also seemingly better line-of-sight due to their increased model size (rough terrain can often give gunpowder units a difficult time finding good firing lines). Use them to attack valuable armored targets, then after their ammunition is spent use them to block for your other missile units since they are decent fighters.

They are vulnerable to ranged fire themselves due to their large model size making for easy targets, and like all ogres are also vulnerable to anti-large units so cheap spearmen or anti-large cavalry can be good counters to minimize their value.

When hired by the Pirates of Sartosa, the Pistolier Maneaters can serve a role similar to that played by the Sartosa Militia initially. While far more expensive than most of their competition and at a disadvantage due to not being Undead (and thus both able to Rout and unable to benefit from the faction's buffs to their undead units), Ogre Pistol Maneaters' combat capabilites compared to other units in their price range are very good, both in melee and in range. Their ranged attack gains considerably on the Militia's and is far more devastating, both doing more damage and having full Armor-Piercing capabilities. In addition, Ogre Pistol Maneaters' foot-speed of 54 outshines every other ground unit the Pirates of Sartosa can field save for the much weaker Scurvy Dogs, which pairs well with their Fire While Moving trait. As a result, the Ogre Pistol Maneaters can take up the role of devastating flankers and chasers very well, slipping around the side of a Sartosan frontline to shred engaged infantry in the side and rear with pistol fire while still being able to take care of themselves in melee, and running (and gunning) down fleeing and broken opposition with ease. Their cost and incongruity means they will be a rare sight in most Pirates stacks, but worth their considerable weight in gold when present.
