Total War: WARHAMMER Wiki

Middle Mountains, also known as The Middle Mountains, is a province introduced in Total War: Warhammer. It's part of An Eye For An Eye, The Realm of Chaos and Immortal Empires.

in An Eye for an Eye it is the start location for the AI-controlled factions Hochland and the Jagged-Horn Tribe and is mostly covered in forest terrain.

Background[]

The Middle Mountains are a small range of peaks in the heartland of the Empire which provide the natural border of Nordland, Ostland, Hochland and Middenland. They are notorious for two reasons: being devoid of mineral resources, and for harbouring Chaotic influence.

The mountains were originally colonised by Dwarfs during The Golden Age, who named the realm Karaz Ghumzul. They remained neutral during The War of the Beard, assumed because of their isolation and proximity to the Elven realm of Laurelorn, but actually because the Dwarfs had discovered a Chaos gate deep under the mountains, and needed all of their strength to contain it. When the Time of Woe came however, the Dwarfs were forced to abandon Karaz Ghumzul. They sealed the hold under rock and rune, leaving behind only a cadre of Slayer-Monks behind to watch over the entrance.

Afterwards humans would settle the area, building or occupying a number of fortresses in the foothills to guard their towns and hamlets, including Brass Keep. A long stretch of peace and prosperity for the area came to an end during The Great War Against Chaos, when the forces of Asavar Kul poured into the Empire's northern provinces, quickly overwhelming the fortresses here.

Although Chaos was eventually defeated isolated pockets of the Empire were never fully reclaimed from its influence, and the Brass Keep is one such place. Of sinister and nebulous origin, the eerily smooth and pearlescent Keep has long been the haunt of those who wish the Heirs of Sigmar evil, and despite numerous attempts to retake and garrison it no sane human can stand being inside its walls for long. Instead the Empire maintains the Picket, a circular fortified wall which rings the hill upon which the Keep stands, (notionally) guarding against the Nurglite cultists who currently occupy it.
