Bolstering the fighting spirit of all those around it and blasting enemy ranks with savage, dark energy.

Mortis Engine is a The Drakenhof Conclave Vampire Counts war machine unit introduced in Total War: Warhammer with The Grim and the Grave.

Recruitment

Description

Many Necromancers and liche-lords have risen to kingship over the Undead, becoming so saturated with evil power that their physical forms radiate magic. Some Vampires actively seek out the citadels of those lords who have gone before, hoping to take possession of their remains and to use them against the living. No mere casket or hearse could be fit to bear the remains of one of these masters of the night. Instead, they are enshrined within a Mortis Engine, a cage of fused bone, surrounded by trappings of grandeur and borne to war by a host of spirits bound to the infernal device. Some reliquaries also carry blasphemous tomes to battle, or scrolls of parchment rumoured to have been penned by Nagash himself. Oft-times the Winds of Magic become night uncontrollable when such a fell tome is near. Heavy with evil magics, painstakingly illuminated with such care that their creator's souls have passed into the leaves of human skin that form its pages, these books can be a boon to the twisted practitioners of Necromancy, but also the bane of reckless and unwary spellcasters.

Strategy

The Mortis Engine is the premier version of the Corpse Cart (Unholy Lodestone), it regenerates nearby allies, grants nearby allies magical attacks, provides a bonus to Magic recharge, and drains the life of enemies. The drain is only active when the cart is in combat, so it is most useful when it is on the front line hitting all of the units in the center. As such, this unit is an incredibly big target and will be destroyed first if an enemy has artillery/missiles or manages to isolate it.

In addition, The Reliquary Binding is a separate effect from Unholy Lodestone, meaning that a Mortis Engine and Corpse Cart put next to each other will grant a not insignificant full 0.1% healing per second. This improves both nearby units and the Engine and Cart's own survivability. This can be further compounded by using a Necromancer or Master Necromancer as their Master of the Dead ability can ramp up to yet another 0.05% healing in the same radius. You can also ditch the Corpse Cart and instead mount the Necromancer on a Corpse Cart (Unholy Lodestone) (mount) to save a space in your army once they reach the appropriate level.
