“ | Behold the horrors endured by the hag's foes at the end of her cauldron's smoky tendrils; Mother Ostankya is a dreaded sight to all! | „ |
Mother Ostankya is a Kislev Legendary Lord unit introduced in Total War: Warhammer III with Shadows of Change. In the campaign, she leads the
Daughters of the Forest.
Description[]
As sworn by the common folk across the oblasts, the horrifying legend of Mother Ostankya is real. While some consider her an apostate, others regard her as a guardian of Kislev who metes out her wrath against any with ill-intention against the land, be they Kislevite, foreign or supernatural. She is rumoured to have once been a powerful Ice Witch who long ago fell foul of the Ice Court – or are such legends a mockery manifested by her hatred for the covenant’s strictures? Yet in times of war, still the hag comes to Kislev’s aid, appearing beside the Motherland’s ranks – especially those left unsupported by the most rabid of Ursunite faith – commanding her cauldron’s potent shadow-spirits to hex foes in unspeakable ways.
Introduction description[]
In Kislev, children both rich and poor are scared into obedience with whispers of the dreaded hag in the woods. Yet the reality is far more horrifying than any child could conceive, for the old crone spoken about in such tales is no mere myth.
Mother Ostankya, an elusive figure empowered by the land itself, draws her terrifying magic from woodland, fen and oblast alike. Those with transgressions against the Motherland, be they of this world or another, find no refuge from her vengeance, even on their own soil.
To the distant north, where stands Kislev’s abandoned watchtowers against the Ruinous incursions, she brings her wrath. There can be no doubt: her appearance so far from home is a portent of terrible curses soon to come.
Mother Ostankya will get you!

Strategy[]
Ostankya is a unique lord who essentially functions as a highly mobile magic artillery piece. Her mortar projectile doesn't have great range but deals hefty damage against infantry blobs, particularly good against armor and demons, and the fact she can fire while moving makes her a great harasser and very difficult for duelists to shut down, if micro'd well. Her bear bomb is also insanely powerful, easily able to put up Ikit Claw-type numbers if aimed well. Although not as impressive as Katarin on her sled she can still cycle-charge through infantry lines effectively, however she should avoid anti-large and extended melee combat wherever possible.
Ostankya has two good methods of mass healing available to her, her unlimited Gulyas ability and the blessing form of Witchbroth. Used enough at the end of battles frees up the usual necessity of bringing a Patriarch with an army in campaign, or potentially bringing one using something other than Salyak's Lullaby. She's relatively flexible in terms of the army you give her, but the extra tech tree her faction gives beast units make them a micro-heavy but extremely effective and mobile shock force.
