Total War: WARHAMMER Wiki
Ostermark is like a miniature of the Empire, a league of free and independent towns relying on each other for mutual security. We have to—no one else in the Empire cares a fig about us.
~ Chancellor Wolfram Hertwig, Elector Count of Ostermark[1]
For the province named Ostermark, please see: Ostermark (province).

Ostermark is a minor Empire faction introduced in Total War: Warhammer. It is led by Wolfram Hertwig and is situated in the north-eastern parts of the Empire.

The League of Ostermark is a major and late-founding Imperial province that lies at the most north-eastern corners of the Empire of Man. Though having existed during the founding of the Empire, the League itself was formed out of the chaos of the late 19th century, when their former capital of Mordheim was struck by a comet of tremendous size. The resulting destruction of the province's central goverment and the death of the ruling family led the remaining towns and villages of the lands to band together and form a new semi-democratic government which would later become known as the League of Ostermark.

Being the homeland of the ancient Ostagoths of Sigmar's time, the territories of Ostermark, which is often remarked as the Empire's "East March" is considered a highly fertile if not hostile landscape. Ostermark is at the very frontiers of the Empire, surrounded on three sides by Kislev, Sylvania and the Worlds Edge Mountains. Neverthless, the people of Ostermark are a valiant breed, and through determination, Ostermark has survived the onslaught of invasion since its founding.[2]

A sombre, bleak land to the east, Ostermark has long been an avenue into the Empire for invaders, as well as Imperial armies on the march north or into the World's Edge Mountains. Being so close to Kislev, Ostermarkers are sometimes accused of sharing the Kislevites' binge-drinking customs.

The Hourglass on the faction's crest is a symbol from the Battle of Elstwater Keep:

During the battle, Count Ostrein of Nordland took an hourglass to the walls of his besieged castle and entreated his men to hold for a single hour. He turned the glass over as the attacking Middenland troops advanced, and for an hour, the defenders held against the vastly larger army of the Graf of Middenheim. As the last of the sands ran out, a great storm broke out and the attackers were forced to abandon their assault. Because of this, the hourglass has become a symbol of defiance and stubbornness amongst regiments from the northern states.[3]
