- Not to be confused with the minor faction of the same name.
Ostermark is a province introduced in Total War: Warhammer, in The Old World campaign.
In the Doomsayers Update for Total War: Warhammer II, the province was altered to include new settlements in the Mortal Empires campaign, these being Nagenhof and Mordheim, the latter starting as Ruins.
Background[]
Ostermark is an electoral province of The Empire, ruled by Wolfram Hertwig. It is the Empire's most easterly province, and forms much of its long land border with Kislev. Talabecland (province) lies to the west and Sylvania to the south. Although it existed as a part of the Empire since its founding, after the death of most of Ostermark's ruling family through the destruction of Mordheim by warpstone meteor in the late 19th century, the remaining towns and villages reorganised themselves into an oligarchic government which describes itself as the League of Ostermark.
Ostermark is a lonely, wind-swept land of moors and plains between two arms of the Great Forest, a taste of the yet more cold and remote steppes of Kislev that lie to the east. When it has peace on its own eastern border, Kislev has often turned envious eyes to Ostermark's grasslands. Known as the Veldt, they are perfect for rearing horses, and in the past Kislevites have been willing to bring war to the Empire over them.
Aside from farming, the economy of Ostermark is centred around its new capital of Bechafen, which takes lumber from the nearby Gryphon Wood and either exports it or turns it into river craft which are considered the best in the Empire. The ruins of Mordheim and the forest surrounding them have a black reputation - unsurprisingly, given the amount of warpstone they contain, they have become overrun by Skaven - as do the Eerie Downs, which border the cursed land of Sylvania. Nevertheless, the trade route into the mountains to Karak Kadrin remains open and well-trodden. Ostermark earns its reputation as a dangerous but profitable place.
Ostermarkers are descendents of the Ostagoth tribe that proved to be redoubtable allies of Sigmar, however they have heavily intermarried with other parts of the Empire as well as with the Ungols and Gaspodars of Kislev. Unsurprisingly Ostermarker culture has a distinctive Eastern-flavoured culture, with kvas and vodka often taken in quantity after work, and they have reputations as a passionate yet morbid people.
