Total War: WARHAMMER Wiki

Some Gnoblars like to 'pig joust' with the enemy, riding atop each other to slay (or at least greatly irritate) the enemy in battle.

Pigback Riders are an Ogre Kingdoms melee infantry unit introduced in Total War: Warhammer III with Omens of Destruction.

Recruitment[]

Description[]

Being as well-travelled as the roaming Maneaters they serve, some Gnoblars have managed to acquire all sorts of clothing, weapons and strange customs on their travels. Among such customs is one of the Gnoblars’ most popular and dangerous sports picked up from Bretonnia, known as "pig jousting". Two Gnoblars sit across from each other on the backs of pigs and charge at each other in an attempt to unseat their opponents. When a Gnoblar horde goes to war, real pigs will not suffice in the intense circumstances of battle, so instead Gnoblars ride atop each other in a "piggy-back" manner using their "pig jousting" tactics to slay (or at least irritate) the enemy.

Attributes[]

  • Spear Infantry
  • Shielded: Shields have a chance of blocking arrows, bolts, rifle shots and similar small arms fire - but only in a forward facing arc.
  • Anti-Large: Anti-Large: Anti-large units have an advantage against targets that are at least as large as a horse. This advantage can be a damage bonus against large targets or an attack that focuses on a very small area. However, some units are simply better against large targets because their attacks are slow and easy to dodge by skilled melee combatants.
  • Expendable: This unit is comparably cheap to recruit, maintain and replenish.

Strategy[]

Completely absurd as they look, Pigback Riders provide a very useful role in the early game. Ogres completely lack an anti-large option until Maneaters (Great Weapons) are unlocked at Tier 4, leaving them vulnerable to cavalry, which can usually outrun them and so neutralises their charging bonus. Swaddling your Ogres in Riders, or leaving them in reserve to defend your ranged, prevents this being much of a problem. Thanks to their large number of entities, they can also dish out a surprising amount of damage.

The only advantage regular Gnoblars have over Riders is being purchasable straight from Tier 1 camps, having an even larger number of entities - making them better as pure chaff - and a lower price point. Unless you're really struggling for cash, you should always go with the Riders where available.
