“ | Though all Kislevites are equal in the eyes of the Motherland's gods, a Boyar is born to rule. His authority is absolute. | „ |
Prince Yuri, or Yuri Barkov, is a Kislev Unique Lord unit in Total War: Warhammer III, appearing exclusively in the Prologue campaign The Lost God leading the
Kislev Expedition.
Description[]
Ranking nobles, Boyars are powerful men and women within Kislev. They each govern specific areas of Kislev, including scores if not hundreds of stanitsas, as well as larger towns and small cities. Especially large cities are governed by Boyars of singular prestige. This is a hereditary rank, although royal edict can raise one to the position. On the battlefield, they are tough and doughty fighters – the best in Kislev, save for the Tzar and the Golden Knight.
Yuri Barkov was dispatched by the Ice Queen, Tzarina Katarin, to the north, to reach Dervingard. After weeks of struggling through the Chaos Wastes, losing much of his army to attrition, Yuri's officers were on the verge of mutiny, with only his brother continuing to support him. Yuri, praying to Ursun for guidance, was contacted by the lost god and decided to follow his whispers further to the north. He came to the aid of Kislevite town of Beacon, intervening just as the Gharhar under Skollden the Wolf try to storm the town and saving it from certain destruction. His subsequent hunt for the Marauder leader led him to clash with the Chaos-worshiping tribes of the North, eventually cornering and slaying the mad creature of Chaos at Dervingard. Taking up the fell blade Wolfbane, Yuri decided to leave Dervingard and follow Ursun's call.
He marched at the head of his army north, deeper into the Wastes, to lay siege to the Howling Citadel at the Bear God's behest. He grew ever more bloodthirsty, laying waste to cults of Tzeentch and northern barbarians alike, undergoing trial after trial and systematically alienating all that would stand by his side. Kislevites who remained with him did so not out of loyalty, but out of fear of retaliation. Eventually, after seeking out the forbidden truths of Tzeentch in the Maze and spilling blood to gain Khorne's favor, Yuri stood at the chasm before the Citadel, when he committed the ultimate sacrilege - he murdered his brother, summoning a bridge of bone to the Citadel and the seemingly traitorous Slavin Kurnz. Accompanied by an Exalted Bloodthirster, he sacrificed his army to slay Kurnz and reach the depths of the Realm of Chaos to find Ursun... And the source of the voice guiding him.
It wasn't the Bear God, chained and imprisoned within the heart of the Chaos Realm. It was Be'lakor, the first Daemon Prince, hoping to turn Yuri to his side. Already corrupted by Chaos, Yuri renounced the Bear God and shot him, apparently slaying the great Ursun - and was promptly ejected by Be'lakor from the Chaos Realm in a betrayal that only Yuri didn't see coming. As he lay broken in the crater, Yuri asked the Chaos Gods to bestow their power upon him, promising to bring Kislev to heel as their new worshippers. The Gods agreed, granting him their boons and turning Yuri into The Daemon Prince and the bane of Kislev in the campaign to come.
