A region is a group of provinces on the campaign map that is somehow distinct from other areas. Regions are technically not part of the game mechanics of Total War (campaign maps are divided into provinces and local regions). Regions are distinct continents, landmasses or other areas which appear in Warhammer Fantasy lore, and are referenced many times in the games.
Not every region from the lore should be included here. Only those which are directly relevant to Total War campaigns and referenced many times in the games.
Regions[]
Other dimensions[]
- Realm of Chaos (region) - the maddening dimension of Chaos exists outside of space and time, and is the origin of Daemons, the greatest threat to the world.
The Warhammer World[]
The Warhammer World is a planet with oceans and several different continents which vaguely resembles Earth. It's climates range from tropical, to temperate, to arctic, with some regions being corrupted by chaotic magic. It has a sun, and 2 moons: the regular white moon called Mannslieb, and the green Chaos Moon Morrslieb (also known by many other names).
- Chaos Wastes - in the far north of the Warhammer world around the pole lies a frozen wasteland, warped by the raw magical energy of Chaos, and home to the Warriors of Chaos. In the center of the Wastes a huge collapsed portal to the Realm of Chaos.
- The Old World (region) - a temperate area of forests and fields, dominated by human factions such as The Empire, Marienburg, Bretonnia, Kislev, Tilea, Estalia and the Border Princes
- Athel Loren - a magical forest in the Old World, stronghold of the Wood Elves. It is the main focus of The Season of Revelation mini-campaign. It lies within Bretonnia but is not truly controlled by them.
- The Drakwald - a dark, Beastmen-infested forest which features heavily in the An Eye For An Eye mini-campaign. It lies within The Empire but is not truly controlled by them.
- Norsca (region) - a cold mountainous peninsula, home to Norscan factions
- Kislev (region) - a country of vast steppes northeast of the Empire, constantly under threat from Norsca and the Chaos Wastes. Known for its extremely cold winters.
- The Badlands - a dry wasteland area south of the Old World but north of The Southlands, home to many Greenskins, it has a warm climate.
- The Southlands - south of the Badlands, this warm continent is split between northern hot deserts - inhabited by the Tomb Kings - and southern jungles.
- World's Edge Mountains - a huge mountain range which divides the Old World, Badlands and Southlands from the Dark Lands to the east. Mostly inhabited by Dwarfs, Greenskins and Skaven
- The Dark Lands - a dry, volcanic land east of the World's Edge Mountains and west of the Mountains of Mourn. It is dominated by the Chaos Dwarfs and numerous Greenskins.
- Mountains of Mourn - east of the Dark Lands lie the world's highest mountain range, where the Ogre Kingdoms are the dominant race
- Far East - the vast fertile lands east of the Mountains of Mourn, they range from temperate to tropical. The Far East is home to Grand Cathay and other predominantly-human nations
- Grand Cathay (region) - a large and ancient civilisation in the furthest east that defends itself against Chaos incursions via a Great Bastion constructed on their northern border.
- The New World - to the west of the Old World, across the Great Ocean
- Naggaroth - the frozen, cold north-western continent, home to the Dark Elves
- Lustria - a south-western continent with a humid tropical climate, dominated by Lizardmen, but many other factions have outposts and colonies
- The Ocean - there are various oceans and seas in the Warhammer World, and in the game, some provinces are located on islands (eg: Sartosa and Albion). One is even located under the sea itself.
- Ulthuan - the idyllic island-continent of the High Elves, which lies in the Great Ocean between the Old World and New World.
