Reikland is a province introduced in Total War: Warhammer. It can be found in The Old World and Mortal Empires.

In Total War: Warhammer's regional occupation system, Reikland is a temperate lowland province which can be settled by human factions and Vampire Counts.

Background[]

Reikland is a founding Electoral Province of The Empire. Bordering Wissenland to the south, The Wasteland and Middenland to the north and Talabecland to the east, Reikland is the westmost province of the Empire, with the Grey Mountains forming its western border. It is the Empire's most politically consequential province because it contains the nation's largest city, Altdorf, and it is from Altdorf that the current Emperor, Karl Franz rules.

Geographically Reikland enjoys good weather, has fertile plains as well as deep forests, and the eastern slopes of the Grey Mountains are seamed with mineral wealth. These contribute to making the province the richest, most settled and cosmopolitan in the nation. Even those parts of the infamous Drakwald Forest it contains are considerably tamer than what other provinces have to contend with. Reiklanders consider their province the very heartland of the nation, expressing greater patriotism and a more outward-looking view of the world than their counterparts, which combined with its wealth allows Reikland to field larger and better equipped state troop armies than any other province. Naturally other Imperial citizens regard Reiklanders as effete, patronising snobs.

To the west, Reikland is protected from threats emerging over the Grey Mountains by the mighty Fort Helmgart, which stands vigil over Axe Bite Pass.

Trivia[]

  • The Empire is heavily rooted in German tropes and stereotypes, most evident in the naming. Reikland would literally mean "King's Realm", since it's a portmanteau of the German term Reich, using the Gothic version (Reiks) and German Land.
    • Altdorf is the heart of the empire, but in German, the name literally means Old Village. Similarly, the names for other settlements come from Germanic names: Grunburg means Green Town, Eilhart shares its name with a 12th century German poet, and Ubersreik would mean, loosely translated, High Realm.
