Runic Magic is a set of powerful abilities unique to the Dwarfs race introduced in Total War: Warhammer II, as a huge overhaul of the Rune character abilities from Total War: Warhammer.

Overview[]

In many ways, Runic Magic functions identically to a lore of magic spells (eg: the Lore of Fire):

  • In campaign, they are gained by ranking up a character and selecting them in the character's skill tree.
  • In battle they can be used by clicking in the bottom right when selecting the character.
  • The abilities can provide buffs, debuffs or do damage in an area.

However, there are also some significant differences:

  • Runic Magic does not use the Winds of Magic meaning there is no power bar, no recharge rate etc. Also, they are not affected by local winds of magic in the campaign.
  • This means that unlike regular spell lores, Runelords and Runesmiths do not drain a collective winds of magic pool.
  • Instead, each Runic Magic ability has a long cooldown, after casting it.
  • Furthermore, after casting any Runic Magic ability, there is also a shorter global cooldown before you can cast another ability.
  • Overall, most Runic Magic abilities are less powerful than spells, and there is a notable lack of damage compared to spells.

Miscasting:

  • There is no chance to miscast with normal Runic Magic abilities, unlike spells which always carry a small chance to miscast.
  • However, each ability can also be overcast (called "Master Rune") which does carry a chance to miscast.
