Total War: WARHAMMER Wiki

With mighty wings outstretched and composite bow at the ready, Saytang's arrows cannot be turned aside.

Saytang the Watcher is a Grand Cathay Legendary Hero unit introduced in Total War: Warhammer III, added with Patch 4.2.0 to Shadows of Change.

Recruitment[]

  • Recruited with: Saytang the Watcher dilemma

Description[]

To the people of the Southern Provinces, it is known simply as "The Watcher"; to others it is "The Heavenly Bowman" or "The Guardian of the Sky". However it is known, Saytang is the Great Sentinel, standing atop the Mountains of Heaven, towering even above others of its kind. Those who have faced Saytang in battle and lived did so by running from the field in abject terror, for its enormous stride enables the Watcher to leap great distances, even from mountainous peak to peak, always poised to smite the enemies of the Dragon Emperor.

Attributes[]

  • Specialist Artillery
  • Harmony Amplifier: +50%: This unit increases Harmony bonuses for nearby units by +50%. Only the strongest amplifier bonus is applied.
  • Armoured: Armoured units can block damage from any source apart from Armour-Piercing damage.
  • Special Ranged Weapon: This unit possesses a missile attack which is uncommon for this type of unit.
  • Cumbersome: This unit's attacks are slower than average due to its massive, lumbering form.

Strategy[]

In order to unlock Saytang efficiently, stack Yin buildings in a major province, using the growth boost to get the capital to tier 3 as quickly as possible before building the Celestial Tower to access the units required. You can swap some of it over to Yang in order to make the recruiting more efficient, but with the recruitment edict it will only take a few turns of buying lions to unlock him even if you don't.

As a unit Saytang functions a bit like a giant, elevated bolt thrower. His shots will dig deep divots through infantry and cavalry units, but they're best utilised against dangerous SEMs and lords, particularly as they have a strong chance of staggering their target, giving your other ranged units more time to whittle them down. His magic missile attack is very unusual, shooting six projectiles around the target in a difficult-to-predict pattern, doing more damage against already damaged units. It hits very hard but is best used from long distance against as wide a front of enemies as possible, because it's a coin toss whether it will hit what you're actually aiming at. While Saytang can do decent damage in melee, he's a huge target with absolutely wretched melee defence, and so will get taken down by halberd units very quickly. Keep him on a strict diet of low level trash if you're going to utilise him this way.

Saytang's biggest value add though is the huge amount of buffs he hands out to a wide range of Cathay's units. He particularly boosts Crossbow units, making him specifically a great friend of Miao Ying's, whose ideal army is a Celestial Dragon Crossbows stack. However he also boosts other stone units (Jade Lions, Jet Lions and Terracotta Sentinels) and Sky-junks , making a wide variety of armies feasible with him.
