Development history and controversy[ | ]
Shadows of Change was announced in the Total War: Warhammer 3 roadmap released in May 2023.[2]
On 8 August 2023, the Shadows of Change trailer was released, along with a blog containing information about the DLC, and the DLC price was revealed as $25 USD / €25 Euros.[3] This made Shadows of Change (together with Forge of the Chaos Dwarfs) the joint most expensive Total War: Warhammer series DLC ever. The next most expensive were priced at $19 USD.
There was community backlash against the price of the DLC and a perceived lack of value for money. Other complaints arose regarding the general state of the game and the frequency of bug fixes and patches/updates.[4]
More than a week later, Creative Assembly responded with a statement by Chief Product Officer Rob Bartholomew, which also contained a message from the head of the new content team Richard Aldridge. Robert Bartholomew's statement attempted to justify the price increase by stating that "our costs have gone up", and "this is the business reality of supporting Warhammer 3."[5] The backlash continued after the statement.[6][7][8] Recent Steam reviews of Total War: Warhammer III became overwhelmingly negative.[9]
In December 2023 Roger Collum, the Vice President of Creative Assembly, posted a blog post explaining how things would be moving forward. A blog post where Creative Assembly apologizes for several points, including the launch of Shadows of Change and content being lacking. At the same time, promising to add more content to the Shadows of Change DLC with an update in February 2024, free to all owners of the DLC.[10]
On 8 February 2024, Richard Aldridge, Game Director for Total War: Warhammer, posted a blog. Aldridge stated that the team believed there wasn't enough content in Shadows of Change and they thought they could put this right. The blog post detailed several new pieces of content that would be added to Shadows of Change for free, as well as one extra free piece of content available to everyone. This would all be arriving in Patch 4.2.0.[11]
