Southern Sylvania is a province introduced in Total War: Warhammer III. This province replaces Eastern Sylvania from the older games.
Background[]
Southern Sylvania is the heartland of the von Carstein family's wretched empire. It contains the massive Castle Drakenhof which has been used as the seat of the ruler of the province-cum-independency, whenever there has existed someone who has wanted to do such a thing. Cold winds perpetually blow downwards from the World's Edge Mountains, making it a dank and misty land with harsh winters. Fens and dense, dark woodland are interspersed with backward, half-populated hamlets and towns.
Ever since the undead were summoned by the lords of Sylvania to drive off an invasion of Skaven many centuries ago, the dead have slept restlessly in its thin soil, and they have become an accepted part of existence by its presently-living population. Ghouls roam the forests and agents of the aristocracy travel the roads once per year to collect the blood tax. Indeed, Sylvania's poor peasantry generally prefer to be ruled by vampires, since The Empire either ignores them or treats them even harsher in its intermittent attempts to purge the province through the use of Witch Hunters.
Sylvania's border to the west is an uncertain thing. Technically parts of it are contested by both Stirland and Averland, but in practice neither of them are interested in governing it. There is also a narrow border with Mootland, which is closely patrolled by Halfling fieldwardens. To the east and south are the Dwarfs of Zhufbar, who equally have as little to do with the vampires as they possibly can.
