Spirits of Shanlin is a minor Wood Elves faction in Immortal Empires.
Lore[]
Athel Loren's most ancient denizens left the great forest long ago to journey to the previously unexplored extremes of their life-giving Worldroots. Beyond the distant mountains to the east, these spirits made their unlikely home. Yet today they are reduced to a small enclave beset on all sides by mischievous locals - the local monkey people loyal to the Dragon Emperor.[1]

Strategy[]
This tiny, extremely isolated Wood Elf faction is tucked away in the deep south of Cathay. To the major factions nearby, Empire and Lizardmen, they are neither here nor there - they are unlikely to attack you, and the fact they occupy a magic forest makes them unappetising to attack in turn, although the loot you get from sacking Wood Elves is always significant. They can be coaxed into allying with you, although they won't be able to do much except present an obstacle to, for instance, an advancing army of undead.
Notably this is the only Wood Elf faction that does not turn hostile during The Wild Hunt Endgame scenario.
They'll also become a target of confederation after you, a Wood Elves faction, defeat Cathay 3 times. It's usually not worth it, since by the time you finished dealing issues in your local Magical Forests, either the "bad" factions have taken over this area, leaving this faction (which makes Cathay factions further away, making you spending money just to find Cathay armies to beat) or the Ordertide faction has ensured their power in this area, which means you having to fight against 3 Cathay armies and since they have no enemies, they will target you along with the nearby Golden Order. It's better to just attack them then occupy this settlement.
Trivia[]
- The name may be based from Chinese "shan lin" (山林), which means "a mountain forest".
- The tree used in the icon may resemble a bonsai tree.
