Stirland is a province introduced in Total War: Warhammer. It begins the campaign controlled by the Stirland minor faction.

Background[]

Stirland is a founding Electoral Province of The Empire, ruled by Grand Count Alberich Haupt-Anderssen. A south-central area of the Empire, it borders Talabecland to the north, Reikland to the west, Averland to the south, and Sylvania to the east.

Stirland is a rugged province with highly variable terrain. Its central areas are a highland known as the Stirhugel, dominated by hill farmers. Its western and northern fringes, around the River Stir, are covered by the Great Forest. And then to the east the gloomy, marshy reaches of the Hunger Wood and Hel Fenn can be found. After the culmination of the Vampire Wars, Sylvania was dissolved as an Electoral Province and most of its lands added to Stirland, technically making the region Eastern Stirland. However this is very much a technicality. A poor and rural province, Stirland's regional government has nothing like the ability to administrate the profoundly cursed lands of the von Carsteins. If the Count's tax collectors go there at all it is under heavy guard, and most Stirlanders try to forget about it.

Partly due to its unwanted association with Sylvania, Stirland is a by-word for misfortune and rural backwardness elsewhere in the Empire. This is a largely unfair reputation, as Stirland has plenty of reasonably prosperous and cosmopolitan cities to its name, such as the regional capital Wurtbad. It has strong trading ties with the Dwarfs of Zhufbar and the Halflings of The Moot to the south. Nonetheless, Stirlanders - descendants of the Asoborn hill tribe, who colonised the area in pre-Sigmarite times - do often express an isolationist and conservative view of the world, over the piping hot ale that is the province's specialty.
