The Cursed City is a province in Total War: Warhammer III. It is part of The Realm of Chaos, Something Rotten in Kislev and Immortal Empires.
Background[]
Praag is the oldest and most northerly situated of Kislev's three great cities, located on the Lynsk near the mountain passes of the east. Its position means that it is inevitably the first major target of any invasion from The Chaos Wastes, and its character and profile reflect this. One of the most heavily fortified cities in the world, it sits behind two huge, viciously spiked walls engraved with Dwarfen runes of protection, between which are many murderholes to further deter invaders. Behind these defences, more walls surround the original city, now known as the Old Town. And on top of that stands the massive cannon-studded fortress, perched on a rocky spur like a massive, misshapen gargoyle.
Despite this, Praag has fallen to Chaos hordes more than once, and the taint of the Ruinous Powers has wormed its way into the very soul of the place - hence why it is known as the Cursed City. Mutant births here are common, and entire sections of the city such as the Bleakness have had to be abandoned entirely, since only sickness, madness and slow, horrible death are to be found there.
The people of Praag do not abandon it, and have rebuilt it every time, because it is worth it. The mountains surrounding the city are rich in silver, so much so that that its minarets and roofs are coated with the stuff. Its easterly location means that it is also the first port of call to any Cathayan caravan that has braved the hazardous journey across The Dark Lands, bringing with them jade, ivory, silk and spices. These aspects have long made Praag a famed city of craftsmen, known to have the best silversmiths, jewellers, embroiderers, tapestry weavers, clockwork makers, and cameo painters in the land. Many of these used ancient Ungol designs and techniques, unknown to the city folk of the south.
The money from this trade paid for Praag's centrepiece: the Magnus Gardens, which contain an opera house, an observatory, and a highly regarded Academy of Music. From the winding streets of Old Town to the teeming Merchant Quarter, Praag is a multicultural jumble of Gaspodars, Ungols, Roppsmenn, Cathayans, Imperials, Dwarfs and Ogres. The Cursed City continues to endure - for now.
