The Great Vortex is a large feature located in the very center of Ulthuan on the Isle of the Dead. Gaining control of the Vortex is the main goal of the Eye of the Vortex campaign and rituals.
Background[ | ]
The Great Vortex is a swirling tempest of magic that was created long ago by the High Elves (and secretly also the Lizardmen) to drain excess magic (raw Chaos energy) out of the world. Since the Daemons of Chaos are creatures of magic and feed on it, this keeps them from invading the mortal plane in large numbers and bringing about the end of the world.
However the Vortex is still only a stop-gap measure, since magic is still pouring into the world from the collapsed Chaos portals at the planet's poles.
Appearances[ | ]
The Vortex can be seen in the cinematic trailer for Total War: Warhammer II. The Great Vortex can also be seen on the campaign map in Mortal Empires, Eye of the Vortex and Immortal Empires. It can also be seen on The Isle of the Dead battle map.
In Eye of the Vortex[ | ]
Four races use rituals to control the Vortex: the High Elves, the Dark Elves, the Lizardmen, and the Skaven. Colourful lines along the Vortex indicate which faction is actively using rituals: blue for the High Elves, purple for the Dark Elves, orange for the Lizardmen, and green for the Skaven. Should no race be doing an active ritual, the faction furthest ahead in the race for the vortex will have their corresponding color coat the vortex. Should no ritual have been commenced by a faction at all, the vortex will simply remain blue.
- If the High Elves win, they simply protect Ulthuan.
- If the Dark Elves win, they use the Vortex to make Malekith into a god.
- If the Skaven win, they summon the Great Horned Rat to conquer the world.
- If the Lizardmen win, they use its power to reinforce the geometric web (great warding).
The other factions in the Eye of the Vortex do not need the Great Vortex, having their own agendas to fulfill.
