Total War: WARHAMMER Wiki

There are several kinds of corruption, each with different effects in addition to factions which reduce corruption.

Corruption or the lack of it, physically changes the appearance of the campaign map.

Overview[]

Broadly speaking, factions which do not spread corruption are harmed by corruption effects, taking hits to public order and even attrition damage if total corruption exceeds 50. However, even a faction with its own corruption to spread can be harmed by other types of corruption. For instance, Vampire Counts can be harmed by Chaos corruption. Each type of corruption will reduce all other types of corruption if it is high enough, so a beneficial type of corruption also provides a form of protection against other types (though on the other hand, this also makes it harder for a faction to spread their own corruption into areas already claimed by another).

Factions that spread corruption may also gain further benefits from spreading corruption besides the general effects on the affected provinces. For example, Cults of Chaos.

Corruption is no longer "zero-sum" like it is in I and II. It is possible for a province to have 100 Slaanesh corruption and 100 Nurgle corruption. It is also possible (but very unlikely) to have every type of corruption in a province at 100.

Corruption / Untainted can be spread by the presence of armies, some items, the presence of heroes, certain buildings, commandments and also some character skills and followers.

Spreading corruption does not, by itself, affect diplomacy with other factions. However races who spread corruption tend to not get along well with others.

If public order gets too low in a corrupted province, then either a Vampiric, Chaos or Skaven uprising will occur instead of a standard rebellion.

Some army stances can protect that army against corruption and attrition.

Characters belonging to other factions may gain certain traits when spending too much time in corrupted regions.

Reducing corruption[]

Reducing corruption is important for many factions. Factions that do not spread any corruption often have buildings that reduce corruption. The Empire, Dwarfs, Greenskins, Bretonnia, Wood Elves, High Elves, Lizardmen, Dark Elves, Tomb Kings, Southern Realms, Kislev, Grand Cathay and Ogre Kingdoms have access to certain buildings and other effects which reduce corruption.

Skaven also have the ability to reduce corruption with certain buildings and effects, as their corruption has drawbacks for themselves too.

Even other factions that spread corruption may have some means to combat corruption of other types, though they are generally pretty limited outside of just ensuring that their own type is the strongest.

Chaos Corruption[]

Chaos Corruption is spread by all Chaos-aligned races and factions, it is divided by 5 types of corruption each with a unique effect. Most factions focus on one type, though Daemons of Chaos can spread all of them.

Chaos Undivided Corruption[]

General Information

Chaos Undivided corruption is spread by Beastmen, Chaos Dwarfs, Daemons of Chaos, and Norsca as well as 3 Warriors of Chaos factions: Warhost of the Apocalypse, Heralds of the Tempest and Shadow Legion. This type of corruption replaced the regular Chaos Corruption from previous games.

  • Chaos Undivided corruption gives control and enables attrition against non-Chaos factions.
  • For Warriors of Chaos, it increases the chances for Undivided-aligned units to be recruited through the Warbands Recruitment.
  • Reduces control for non-Chaos factions.
  • High levels of Chaos Undivided Corruption in provinces with low control will cause rebellion by whichever race or faction spread the corruption.
  • Chaos Undivided corruption makes the land turn grey with cracks and rivers of lava.

Skaven Corruption[]

Skaven Corruption[]

Skaven corruption is spread by all Skaven factions but is unique in the fact that it also harms public order of the Skaven themselves.
  • Skaven factions have access to a range of buildings to spread both Skaven corruption and untainted, requiring a balance between the two to maintain control in regions.
  • Skaven corruption is the only form of corruption that doesn't cause any attrition to armies (aside from Untainted/lack of corruption).
  • Skaven corruption causes warpstone to appear in the region, as well as tunnels and Skaven construction. Its appearance is more subtle than other corruptions, representing that it is mostly affecting the underground.
  • High levels of Skaven Corruption in provinces with low control will cause rebellion by Skaven Rebels.
  • High levels of Skaven Corruption gives their armies more free uses of The Menace Below when fighting in the province.

Vampiric Corruption[]

Vampiric corruption is spread by Vampire Counts and Vampire Coast factions and causes attrition to armies of factions not part of either of those races in certain army stances.

For the Vampires, the spread of this corruption prevents attrition to their own armies and provides public order bonuses. It also improves the quality of units summoned by the Raise Dead mechanic.
