High Elves unit: Tree Kin (High Elves)
“ | The strongest of souls gather the forest around them and are reborn as instruments of its defence. | „ |
Tree Kin are a Wood Elves monstrous infantry unit introduced in Total War: Warhammer with Realm of The Wood Elves.
Recruitment[ | ]
Unlocked with: Tribal Stones or Temple of Isha
Description[ | ]
At the heart of every Tree Kin resides the soul of a dead Elf, though this is not the fate of all. Only the strongest and most driven souls retain enough individuality to become such creatures. Most, eager to renounce the identity and struggles that shaped their mortal lives, pass into the Weave of the forest. Though their family and friends might occasionally fancy that they can hear their loved one's voice upon the wind, it is but an echo of a life long abandoned. However, those souls that become Tree Kin are unable to completely abandon their grip on their former lives, and they forge themselves a new body out of dead timber so that they might continue to defend in death that which they loved in life.
Attributes[ | ]
Monstrous Infantry
- ▲ Armoured: Armoured units can block damage from any source apart from
Armour-Piercing damage.
- ▲ Forest Spirit: The spirits of Athel Loren are able to shrug off most mundane attacks, causing magical damage in turn before melting into the forest from whence they came.
- ▲ Charge Defence Against Large Foes: When standing and bracing against a charge of large enemies (such as cavalry or monsters) this unit will negate the enemy's charge bonus.
Strategy[ | ]
Tree Kin are the definition of road blocks. They are meant to hold enemies in place and tie them down so other elements of your army can win the fight. With high melee defence, armor, and some physical resistance, these forest spirits will take ages to kill. Unless of course the enemy brings fire attacks or magical damage, in which case their survivability will be reduced. Tree Kin have especially remarkable mass and will not be moved by enemy charges. Putting a front line of Tree Kin in Guard Mode will maintain a very clean front battle line for devastating linear spells such as the Penumbral Pendulum which is available to both Branchwraiths and Shadow-lore Spellsingers, or of course the Burning Head from a Fire Mage if the Tree Kin are being used by the High Elves / Averlorn.
In the role of road block their main competitors are Eternal Guard. Eternal Guard are cheaper and with their spears and numbers will be able to dish out more damage to large enemies, but they are not immune to psychology, can't spook enemies and can't soak the same amount of damage. Who the army will mostly be dealing with should dictate which one you invest in for your front line.
