Tzarina Katarin is a Kislev Legendary Lord unit introduced in Total War: Warhammer III. In campaign, she leads
The Ice Court.
Description[]
Ascending to the throne and crown in the wake of her father's bloody death fighting against the hordes of Chaos, Katarin has wasted no time cementing her grip upon Kislev. She is, in every way, a totalitarian ruler. She is stern and unflinching and will readily have rivals removed by agents of the crown if she cannot win them over with cold reason. The base of Katarin's power, beyond hereditary right, is her extraordinary magical prowess. She is the greatest Ice Witch for generations, capable of magical feats more deadly and devastating than any other Ice Witch in Kislev.
Campaign Description[]
The Realm of Chaos[]
"Kislev. A realm forged by the Khan Queens of Old. The bulwark against the darkness. The living bastion that protects the Empire and the soft nations to the south.
Since her father's death, Katarin has taken the throne, but there are many within the realm who resent her rule, even now, the power of the Great Orthodoxy rises against the Ice Queen. If she is to save Ursun, to step beyond her borders and into the Chaos Realms, Katarin must have a united nation at her back.
I journey to her now, across the icy fringes, to the Ice Court. If she is to take my advice, I fear she will need convincing. Word has reached the Ice Court of my coming, and an audience in her throne room has been granted."

Strategy[]
Katarin utilizes the Lore of Ice which has excellent synergy in the early campaign. The signature Ice Sheet slows enemies down and the Maiden's Kiss only needs to touch a single model to slow the entire unit, allowing Kossars to excel. Later, Heart of Winter can be decisive against large enemy hordes, with her discount Ice Guard acting as the backbone to her army. Katarin is an excellent diplomat, and after your initial war is over, avoid conflict with the Empire or Kislev, win the supporters race and confederate the other Kislev factions.
In most respects, save for the fact that she wields a lore of magic unique to Kislev, Katarin is a unique mage lord like any other—that is to say, that her real utility lies in her ability to wield magic, and to preclude the need for a mage in her army. However, Kislev has a very unique situation, in that it doesn't have a pure melee fighter hero, which means that, unlike most factions' unique mage lords, Katarina can and will have to face off against enemy generals in single combat. For this reason, it is wise to keep her back from the fight, even more than you would normally do with most mages, simply because you will need her to counter enemy Lords and heroes. Thankfully, her stat line is such that she can serve as a decent melee fighter early in the game, and her spells become powerful enough to give a major advantage later on, allowing you to hold a hero or unit or two back to help her handle a high-level enemy lord, but even so, she is an unusually important leader outside of Vampire Court (or Vampire Pirate) factions, especially given her ability to summon a guardian spirit to help her in the fight.
