Wissenland is a province introduced in Total War: Warhammer. It begins the campaign controlled by the Wissenland minor faction.
In Mortal Empires, Pfeildorf was later added to the Solland region.
Background[]
Wissenland is a founding electoral province of The Empire. It forms the nation's south-west corner, bordering Reikland to the north, Averland to the east and the Grey and Black Mountains to the west and south. The territories of Wissenland were originally confined between the Grey Mountains and the River Sol, however after the destruction of Solland at the hands of Gorbad Ironclaw in the 18th century its lands were formally absorbed into Wissenland. It is ruled by Countess Emmanuelle von Liebwitz, although she defers all military matters to her advisor Elspeth von Draken.
Wissenland contains the city-state Nuln, the largest industrial settlement in the Old World. From its many workshops and foundries flow some of the most devastating black powder weapons known to man, and at its world-famous Gunnery School the greatest engineering minds the Empire contains seek to create yet better ways to bring explosive death down on the heads of the Empire's enemies. Such is the size and importance of the city to the Empire's survival, the province is sometimes known as Wissenland & Nuln.
Outside of Nuln, Wissenland is well-watered and settled to its east, but grows barren and flinty to its mountainous west, with much of this land given over to mining, the rights for which are carefully negotiated from its native Dwarfs. Thanks to lying on the Empire's southern border the province sees a lot of overland trade, particularly through the River of Echoes, an underground tunnel which links Wissenland to Tilea, invaluable in winter when snow closes the mountain passes.
Wissenlanders are descendents of the pre-Imperial Merogen tribe. They enjoyed good relations with the neighbouring Dwarfs and were quick to answer Sigmar's summons to the Battle of Black Fire Pass. They are reputed to be a hardworking, plain-speaking, dour and devout folk, with their cities often containing multiple chapels and shrines to every member of the Imperial pantheon.
